Volume 1, January 2010
Happy New Year from St. Paul Press!
2009 was a great year for St. Paul Press. We saw good growth
inspite of the recession. However, we know that this would not have
happened without the Lord's blessings and help and your
support
and referrals.
Thank you for believing in St. Paul Press. As we enter
2010, we believe that God has great things in store for St. Paul Press
and for you.

Notes
from the
Publisher
The
book publishing
game has changed dramatically over the last 10 years or so. If you know
anything about the publishing industry, you know that even major
publishers are scrambling to try to catch up with the fast-pace changes
that are occuring. And the truth of the matter is, many of these major
publishers don't have a clue as to which direction to
take. You
also know that it is never wise to totally
self-publish your book because, quite frankly, in most cases, if you
don't have a third party (i.e. label) helping you with publishing, your
sales are
going to suffer because most people are not going to buy a book from
someone who published it themselves. With that said, we believe that
God has led you in the right direction by choosing to publish your book
with a company such as St. Paul Press. With a company like St. Paul
Press, you get professional
publishing options without having to deal with the hassle and long wait
of publishing with a major publishing house (which can take up to 18
months once you sign a contract), or the skepticism and
negative perceptions that come with publishing on your own. You are
also able to stay on the cutting edge of changes in the publishing
industry, such as the current changes that are occuring with rapid
speed because of
the increase in e-book readers and e-book reading. We thank God for
your partnership as we continue to publish Christian books that glorify
God and inspire people.
If you find some time, please read the articles below. They will be of
benefit to
you as you continue to write and publish for the glory of God.
May God grant you a blessed 2010.
Small
Publishers
Offer the Best Opportunities for Getting Published in Today's Dying
Publishing World
R.
L. Coffield
It’s
common
knowledge in the publishing world that the best books
don’t necessarily get published. Those authors with the
biggest
platform, those who the publisher knows will attract the most
attention, get published. Basically, who will sell more books? You or a
movie star? Forget the message. It's the messenger that counts in
today's fading publishing business.
Every author believes his/her book will be the next American novel, or
the next book to be on the New York Times Best Seller list for 104
weeks running. Some books that are horrible get this rating. Some books
that are great never see the printed page. Thus, the odds of getting
published by a “major” publishing house are rapidly
failing, largely because “major” publishing houses
are
rapidly failing.

Undergoing Technological Changes

Three
companies predict
books will go the way of eight-track tapes. As
a result, they are heating up the electronic reader market.
A year ago, Amazon.com introduced its Kindle reader that allowed people
to download books right on it. The company emerged as a leader in the
e-book market through its content delivery service. Partnering with
Sprint to enable Kindle users to wirelessly download digital e-book
content to Kindle through the Sprint EVDO network.
But, the market offers enough business for others to step in.

How
to Write Your
Book: 4 Ideas That Get the Creative Juices Flowing
Paul
Godines
A
sunny day with time to
write your book, and then you cant get the
creative juices flowing. You probably just need some ideas, a boost, a
kick in the pants, whatever it is you need don't want to waste the day.
So how can you overcome this debilitating situation and get going? Here
are a few ideas:
1. Create a Collage of pictures clipped from magazines, surrounding
your subject niche. For example; if your writing about horses, go and
get several horse magazines and clip out any pictures that you feel are
beautiful and moving.
2. Consider changing your Location, if your inside go outside. If you
feel that going to the beach or a coffee house would help you write,
grab the laptop and get going. Go wherever you can that you feel could
get your juices flowing.

Marketing
Books for
Authors and Writers
Linda

Marketing
is the bugbear
of many creative types, to the extent where
the shy introverted writer is almost a cliché. Several
excellent
volumes take this fear and help the writer to run with it.
Every author needs to know something about the business of book
marketing. Even if she is published by a conventional publishing house,
the onus of promotion may fall squarely in her court. By gaining even a
rudimentary sense of some of the many things an author can do to
promote her book, she is ahead of the competition.
